Venture
is a small, independent snowboard manufacturer, nestled
in Colorado's remote San Juan
Mountains. Owned and operated by the
husband and wife team of Klemens and Lisa Branner, the
company is dedicated to handcrafting high performance
snowboards while minimizing environmental impact.
The company moved from Bayfield,
CO to Silverton in March of 2007. Situated at
9,318 feet above sea level, Silverton is surrounded by
the rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado’s
largest
mountain
group. Outside of Alaska, no other mountain range in the
U.S. has a higher average elevation. The town is also
home to the extreme ski area, Silverton Mountain, and
its expert-only terrain. Combined with nearly limitless
backcountry opportunities, it offers a perfect
laboratory just steps from Venture's front door.
Venture now inhabits a historic
storefront on Silverton's main drag, and is hatching a
scheme to build its own factory just north of town.
Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring of 2009. In
keeping with the company's environmental ethic, plans
for the new 4,000 square foot building include passive
and active solar features, as well as the use of
sustainable, recycled, and reclaimed materials
throughout.

Brice Hoskin has put Silverton on the sledding map with
his Mountain Boy Sledworks. The business has taken over
three Silverton buildings, employs seven residents, has
a Chinese factory and 20 sales reps across the country,
and sales in more than 300 locations in 49 states,
Canada and Japan.
The kicksleds are the best seller in Silverton, where
residents get a wholesale discount on the $250 devices
and the town avoids plowing the first good snowfall so
it can be packed into a long-lasting crust of snow.
Outside of Silverton, where a lack of long-term snowy
streets or too much traffic makes the kicksled less
practical, Mountain Boy sells an ever-growing catalog of
retro sleds designed for bombing down slopes.
"If it's wood and it moves, it's a possibility for
us," said Kevin Gagnon, Mountain Boy director of
operations.
The kicksleds and the high-end sleds are made in
Silverton, but for the past five years, the remainder
have been made in China, in a family-operated factory
Hoskin visits about five times a year. The sleds are
shipped to Silverton, and once a week a truck rumbles
out of town with a load bound for some surprising
places.
Mountain Boy sleds are sold in such disparate
locations as Saks Fifth Avenue, Plough and Hearth
catalogs, Carl's Pharmacy in Aspen, an electric-bike
shop in Salt Lake City and a jewelry store in Little
Rock, Ark.
